I am a watch collector and have been wanting the 1822 for quite some time now. I have 3 other Luminox watches and the 1822 seemed like a great, simple watch that I could wear all day without even thinking about it. I received it 5 days ago so take my review with that in mind.
The negatives: My first impression was that the watch is much larger than 42mm. It's more around the 47-49mm range. That disappointed me since I do not like large watches at all. Maybe it's the fact that there is no bezel at all and that makes it look bigger than it really is.
The case and bracelet have rough edges (which to me denotes a lack of refinement and quality that my other Luminox watches have) that can dig into your wrist, depending on how sensitive you are to rough edges.
The bracelet is not what I expected. It seems a little light and aluminum-like, instead of that heavy, stainless steel feel of other Luminox watches.
When I unscrewed the crown and pulled it out to set the time, I noticed a loose feeling to the crown and when moving the date and day, I could feel that it does not have that tight, solid feel of other Luminox watches.
The positives: The luminescence is of course, top notch. That is why most would pick a Luminox in the first place and this watch carries on the Luminox tradition of excellent night visibility.
The box and instructions seem well thought out.
The simpleness of the dial is excellent.
Readability is easy in daylight or darkness, being that it is such a large watch.
Keep in mind that it may be that I was unfortunate enough to get a watch that is "off" a bit when it comes to what you are likely to get but it was a surprise since every other Luminox experience has been flawless. Things like a bracelet with sharp edges that feels lighter and with less quality of other bracelets may not be important to you. Or a crown that feels loose. If they are not important, this is a great watch. It seems to be keeping time right to the second since the day I got it and set it to the atomic clock and the second hand lines up with the minute markers perfectly.
As far as value is concerned....... any watch that uses tritium gas tubes is going to have a big mark up in price. If the watch is a good seller, the mark up may be even bigger. This is a best seller for Luminox and they fly off the shelves so what I paid may be a good price considering what the watch has. I think a lower price tag would justify my overall experience with this watch. I paid just under $300 and I think if it would have been under $200, I would have received what I paid for.
